Lenten rose, Helleborus x hybridus, is not actually a rose at all, but a cousin of the buttercup. Hellebores bloom in winter, usually anywhere between January and March. It can be hard to find unique flowers for a wedding this time of year but these little guys love the cold weather. And although I may be a bit biased (lenten roses are one of my absolute favorite garden flowers of all time), these little gems will brighten any winter bouquet!
Hellebores wilt quickly because they don’t take up water once they are cut, but cauterizing the cut stem with a lighter to stop the sap flow will make the flower stalks last for two weeks or more, according to The Landscaping Network. These flowers are very seasonal, but oh so worth it! If your florist can’t get any Helleborus for you, try taking a look around some local nurseries and you just may be able to find some blooming plants that will supply you with beautiful wedding flowers and then become great additions to your garden.
