Valentine’s Day Kids Craft Ideas – Continued

Thumb Creature Valentine:

What you make:

This project makes a simple Valentine’s Day card that is still very much homemade.

What you need:

  • Paintbrush
  • White acrylic paint
  • Paper plate
  • Colored card stock
  • Black and pink markers

How you do it:

  1. Use the paint brush to spread a thin layer of paint on the bottom of the paper plate to use as an ink pad.
  2. Press your thumb into the “ink” and press it onto the center of the front of a piece of folded card stock. This will be the bunny’s (or other creature’s) face.
  3. Use a smaller finger or the side of your thumb to make ears.  The side of your thumb will create elongated ears for a bunny and other fingers can be used in different ways to make other shapes of ears for other creatures. Use the tip of your pinky for small round ears for a bear etc.
  4. Let the paint dry!
  5. Use markers to write a message in the card and give the creatures a mouth, pink in the ears, a nose, whiskers etc. Use sayings like “some bunny loves you” for the bunny and “here is a bear hug” for a bear.

Lollipop Flowers

What you make:

This project creates a lollipop flower perfect for giving away.

What you need:

  • Red and green card stock
  • Scissors
  • One flat lollipop round lollipop per flower
  • Glue stick

How you do it:

  1. Cut a heart from red card stock that is just larger than the candy part of the lollipop. Glue the heart to the wrapper so the lollipop sits in the center of the heart with the stick as a stem.
  2. Fold the green card stock in half and cut leaf shapes that are connected by a fold at the bottom. Wrap the leaves around the stick and glue them together to make them appear to be leaves on the lollipops stick or “stem”.
  3. Write messages on the back of the hearts.

Two Of a Kind Treats

What you make:

This project makes a treat that lets friends know that the two of you are two of a kind.

What you need:

  • Double sided tape
  • Individually wrapped treats (licorice sticks, “smarties” candies, pixie sticks)
  • Card stock
  • Marker

How you do it:

  1. Using double-sided tape, secure one end of 2 individually wrapped treats inside a small piece of folded card stock.
  2. Write “We’re two of a kind” on the card stock. Other good message choices include “You’re TWO cute” and “We make a perfect pair”

Text Message Valentines

What you make:

This project makes a cute “cell phone” Valentine’s Day card that is great for kids that are a little older.

What you need:

  • Silver card stock
  • White card stock
  • Button candy
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Markers

How you do it:

  1. Cut a 2 ½ inch by 7 inch rectangle from the silver card stock. Fold it in half so it resembles a flip style cell phone. Round the edges while it is folded.
  2. Use white paper to create a message “screen” on the front of the phone and a larger screen on the top inner fold of the phone.
  3. Make a silver card stock antenna for the phone
  4. Use the button candies still attached to the paper to create a keypad for the phone.
  5. Write messages on the screens using text speak.  The messages can also be printed and glued on to the message screens to appear more realistic.

Songs of Love

What you make:

This project creates a music player Valentine.

What you need:

  • A small box of candy, like conversation hearts. A 1 ounce box of the hearts should do it.
  • Card stock or craft paper
  • Markers
  • A printed “screen” for the music player.  It can be a love song list or just a message.
  • Tape
  • Two 14 inch pieces of string to create headphone wire
  • Two wrapped peanut butter cups to make “ear buds” (or other wrapped candy)
  • Aluminum foil to wrap the candies used as ear buds
  • A circle of white paper to use as the music players scroll wheel

How you do it:

  1. Tape each end of a piece of string to a peanut butter cup. Tie on the other piece of string as shown, then tape the loose end to the candy box.
  2. Wrap each peanut butter cup in a circle of aluminum foil.
  3. Wrap the card stock around the candy box and secure it with a glue stick.
  4. Cut paper shapes or play list for the scroll wheel and screen and write on any messages. Use a glue stick to attach them to the box.

Bear Hug Treat

What you make:

This project makes a treat for friends sending hugs and love their way.

What you need:

  • Small plastic bags
  • Bear shaped cookies and crackers like teddy grahams, gummy bears
  • Card stock
  • Hole punch
  • Ribbon

How you do it:

  1. Fill small plastic bags (found in craft stores) with the gummy bears, cookies etc.
  2. Write a message on card stock and punch a hole in the corner.
  3. Twist the bag shut and run ribbon through the hole on the card stock. Use the ribbon to tie the bag shut.

Easy Make Valentine’s Day Pencils

What you make:

This project makes a nice present that friends can use.

What you need:

  • Pencils, plain or Valentine themed will work
  • Card stock
  • Double sided tape
  • Marker

How you do it:

  1. Cut a flag for the pencils from card stock. 4 inches by 2 inches is fine but any size big enough for a short message will do the trick.
  2. Write a message on the flag. Tape on tiny card stock hearts or just draw some with markers.
  3. Secure the flag to the pencil near the eraser with the double sided tape

Craft projects are a great way for kids to have fun and take pride in doing something for others instead of just signing their name to a bunch of cards. Folded card stock and some markers will lead to some great cards as well.
