History of Wedding Invitations
The term "white wedding" normally refers to the white color of the bride's wedding dress, a tradition that came about in the Victorian era, with Queen Victoria. White dresses soon became a representation of social status, because lace was expensive and white dresses could easily be soiled, making them common only among wealthy families. The tradition of white weddings has been carried through to many aspects of traditional weddings...right down to the bulk of wedding invitations sold to the most modern of brides.
Symbolism of Black and White Wedding Invitations
White has traditionally represented: light, reverence, purity, snow, peace, innocence, cleanliness, simplicity, security, humility, sterility, air and hope. The sharp contrast of black accents and attire is considered by many to be the only pure color to accentuate white invitations, though black is now used in many modern wedding invitation color combinations.
