I know less than a handful of people who met their spouses before high school. It’s certainly a rare and beautiful thing to grow and change with the person you eventually marry!
Such was the fate of Christina and Andy. Rivals in excellence by eighth grade, they each received the “Student of the Year” award, but Christina had Andy beat with her additional “Perfect Attendance” award. When Andy’s mother asked if he knew Christina, he answered affirmatively, with a tinge of jealousy.
The two were friendly in high school and became even closer friends when they attended college together at the University of Maryland. As if that wasn’t enough togetherness, they also worked the same college job!
Nearly 11 years after their initial acquaintance, Andy began to pursue Christina as more than a friend, but unfortunately she didn’t seem to notice his “subtle advances.” He kept at it for roughly three years before she got the picture!
After that, there was no looking back. Andy suffered a traumatic brain injury in 2012, which made him take stock of his life and what was most important. Read: Christina. It was time for the next step in their relationship!
“I popped the question after Christina and I had talked about her helping me buy a ring, but in secret, I had only been asking her to help [me figure out] exactly what she wanted. With her mom, I got her a ring and proposed out of the blue while we [were on vacation in] Wintergreen, Virginia.”
Because they wanted to embrace both Christina’s Cambodian roots and Andy’s Jewish roots — and their mutual love of Hawaii — they opted to divide their wedding into three separate celebrations!
